Karen was my mentor in the mentoring programme of the BDÜ LV Baden-Württemberg (Federal Association of Interpreters and Translators, Baden-Württemberg regional group). She was immediately very friendly and it did not take long for me to feel ease with her. She understood quickly – actually faster than me – which problems I was facing as a new conference interpreter and translator on the market. She gave me precious tips on positioning myself and marketing my services. It was thanks to Karen that I realised that specialisation is the key to success as a freelance translator. She also recommended some very good books on marketing and she shared with me her experience in this field. With Karen I have learnt to set new goals for my business – but without putting too much pressure on myself. My business goals are now ambitious but always attainable, which was not always the case at the very beginning of my career. As a beginner, I also had a few difficult situations to deal with and it was not always easy for me. However, Karen always found the right words to motivate me. With Karen’s encouragement I have become more self-confident and I am now optimistic about the future of my business.
I’m a freelance translator and had been toying with the idea of expanding my business and working more hours for a while. But how do you go about doing that? When I signed up for the mentoring programme of the BDÜ LV Baden-Württemberg (Federal Association of Interpreters and Translators, Baden-Württemberg regional group), I wasn’t quite sure what to expect from the project exactly. Karen Rückert was my mentor and the match couldn’t have been better! Our life circumstances are similar, but she has a few more years experience and knowledge than I do. She was very happy to share this knowledge with me, provided me with assistance and support and always had something motivating to say when I wasn’t quite sure what to do next. Her friendly, helpful nature makes her the perfect mentor and I know that I have taken a great leap forward thanks to her support and encouragement.
After deciding to start working as a freelance translator I met Karen Rückert who gave me a lot of support in her function as mentor. She gave me valuable tips when I was starting out and was happy to answer all of my questions. When you are starting out you have a lot of doubts and questions but Karen Rückert supported me with her professional expertise and helpful nature. She pointed out potential pitfalls both in relation to translation and the translation industry in general, recommended helpful books, introduced me to marketing, conducted Skype webinars with exercises on English law and gave feedback on the exercises, recommended seminars for my specialist areas and more besides. With Karen Rückert’s help I am now much more sure of myself than I was at the start and I am very grateful to have had such a competent expert by my side.
Working together with Karen Rückert as my mentor was a great experience for me which helped me immensely both personally and professionally. Karen’s competence and her extensive professional knowledge in the field of law and contract law helped me to deepen my knowledge in this specialist field and to understand complex relationships more easily. In translation we went through numerous ways of dealing with passages of text which seemed unclear and she showed me how and where to research terminology efficiently. The topic of work organisation also regularly came up in our meetings since we are both mothers and are trying to juggle work and family life. It is a relief to know that I am not alone with these problems and in difficult situations Karen often had a good tip to share. Karen knows how to motivate people while at the same time making it clear that it doesn’t make sense to want too much either. All in all Karen is simply a wonderful example of how it is possible as a translator with a high level of commitment, high quality requirements and pronounced collegiality to be a very successful businesswoman.
Thank you, Karen, for your support!
